Member of the Month: Mike Thompson, Mike Thompson Leadership

Our newest Member of the Month is someone that brightens a room just with his presence, and is constantly working to make the world a better place for all (and he is!), the amazing Mike Thompson. If we had to describe Mike in five words: extroverted, philanthropic, empathetic, humble, and passionate. Mike has lived all over the country helping non-profit organizations and their leaders reach their fullest potential. Now he’s back in his hometown of Tulsa, providing consulting services to up-and-coming non-profits, and coaching executives and emerging leaders to help make our beloved City that much better.

His consulting company, Mike Thompson Leadership, is founded on the belief that something exceptional happens when an organization’s talent, resources, and culture are aligned with its mission, strategy, and values. When that alignment meets brilliance, and the brilliance which exists within your organization, magic happens! He’s committed to bringing out that magic in your organization.

Aside from the amazing contributions Mike is making to the local non-profit world, he and his partner Ron just recently got engaged and moved into their new home together! Be sure to read on to learn more about Mike and his mission to make the world a better place.

What is one of your favorite things about being a member of the root coworking?

As one who has spent his career working in team environments and is now working solo, being a member of The Root gives me the social interaction I’ve been missing working from my home office.

What do you do? Tell us a little bit about your company.

I believe there is magic inside every organization…and I’ve learned to draw it out by tapping into the individual and collective brilliance of team members to create dynamic cultures and mission-focused impact. In my 25 years of nonprofit leadership experience, I’ve created a lot of magic and now, my passion is helping other leaders create theirs! I do that by providing consulting services as well as leadership coaching.

What is the best part of your job?

The best part of my job is watching emerging leaders confidently step into her/his/their own leadership style and shine!

What’s a work-related accomplishment that you’re really proud of?

I think the number is now seven people who have previously worked for me have gone on to be nonprofit Executive Directors or CEOs.

When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?

My passion to make a difference started early. I was the kid in the neighborhood who was always going door-to-door raising money. I knew I wanted to do something to make the world a better place and these fundraising skills have certainly come in handy.

What is your favorite restaurant in Tulsa and what do you get there?

While I don’t have a single favorite, my current Favorite Find is the Lobster Frito Pie at Peacemaker. Drop everything and go get this now!

What is the plot of your favorite movie or book?

A Little Life by American novelist Hanya Yanagihara follows the lives of four friends in New York City from college through to middle age. It’s beautiful and painful and while I had to stop and come up for air, I couldn’t put it down.

Given unlimited resources, how would you go about making the world a better place?
Unlimited resources, eh? Easy, I’d establish a foundation to give away money in support of the good people doing good  in the world. I’d love to go from raising money to giving it away!

When you walk into member of the month Craig Sutter’s private office inside a private office, you’ll see them immediately: the most fun dog portraits! Makes perfect sense, as he’s an animal lover that works for a dog-ter company. As CTO for Vetsource, Craig handles all things tech and built the entire department from the ground up. Craig has been with Vetsource since, literally, day one and you can see how that loyalty has paid off for him and his company.
