When I stepped into the role of Community Manager of The Root – Fayetteville, I thought I understood what the job would be. Keep the space running smoothly, welcome members, plan events, solve problems. The practical things. What I didn’t realize was how much of this role would be about the people; their risks, their growth, their wins, and the quiet moments in between.
This first year has been one of the most fulfilling experiences of my professional life. I’ve had a front-row seat to members launching businesses, shifting careers, landing major clients, and building confidence simply because they had a place that supported them. I expected productivity to be a big part of coworking. I didn’t expect to see so much personal transformation happen alongside it.
What a Year of Community Taught Me
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that people are craving connection just as much as they’re looking for a place to work. A quick “good morning”, remembering what someone is working on, introducing two members who should absolutely know each other; those small, human moments carry more weight than we often realize. Especially in a time when the world can feel so dark and isolating.
Community isn’t built only through big events or announcements. It’s built in the kitchen while a cup of coffee is being filled, in passing conversations between meetings, and in the simple comfort of not having to work alone.
Our grand opening celebration was the first moment I really felt the heart of this place come to life. The space was full of laughter, conversations, and people exploring what The Root could become for them. It stopped feeling like a new project (and construction site) and started feeling like a living, breathing community. That energy hasn’t gone away, it’s just grown and deepened over time.
The Culture We’ve Built Together
While we’ve hosted some incredible events in the past year, many of my favorite memories aren’t the ones on the calendar. They’re the spontaneous ones. The member who overhears a conversation and jumps in with the exact resource someone needs. Two people meeting here and later realizing they’re now collaborators. Celebrating each other’s wins in real time, whether it’s a new client, a launch, or simply getting through a tough week. Those moments are the true measure of what this space is meant to be.
None of this happens without the people who show up every day. To our members, partners, and the team working behind the scenes, thank you for trusting this space and each other. You’ve shaped the culture here with your openness, creativity, and willingness to engage. The Root is what it is because of the people in it.
The Door’s Always Open
As we look ahead, my hope is that we continue building an environment where ambition feels supported, creativity feels welcome, and collaboration happens naturally. A place where new faces feel at ease quickly, where ideas are shared freely, and where work feels a little less isolating and a lot more inspiring.
