Member Of The Month: Joel Carr, Connect Advisors

Joel Carr is a dynamic member of the Connect Advisors team and serves as the Lead Director of their Tulsa office. With a deep background in construction, Joel has worked on major projects like the BOK Center and previously held the role of Director of Construction and Facility Planning at Tulsa Community College before joining Connect Advisors.

His love for construction started early thanks to a childhood obsession with Legos and, as he puts it, being “probably the youngest Golf Course Developer ever.”

“When I was 12, the local park had a little run-down mini golf course that was cheap, and the fam used to go all the time. One day I asked the elderly man who owned it if he needed help. That summer, I landed my craziest job—I was the Director of Grounds and Maintenance. He let me make all the decisions: repainting obstacles, re-turfing holes, cleaning up the landscaping. I screwed a lot of things up but learned a ton. And now my resume says ‘Golf Course Development’—jk.”

Even with his busy schedule, Joel is a true pillar of our community here at The Root. He’s always up for a chat, a quick joke, and somehow manages to connect with just about everyone he meets.

“I heard a sermon the other day on the importance of community. That message really stuck with me. It’s so important not to isolate, and to have friends who can lift you up and keep you accountable. My wife and I really prioritize this. I have a weekly men’s breakfast with the same group of guys, our home group has met on Wednesdays for over 15 years, and Cassia hosts ‘Cassia’s Cocktails’ at our place every Friday with the ladies. We take annual trips—boys’ trips in the limo, lake house weekends with the group, girls’ trips, family vacations. Doing life with others takes intention, but it’s always worth it.”

Joel’s the kind of person you don’t forget, especially if you’ve seen him driving around town in his stretch limo with the airbrushed vanity plate that reads “Foxy Grandma.”

What’s your favorite part about being a member of The Root Coworking?

I love the friendly atmosphere that the staff have worked to create. The feeling I get when I am having to be in a space is important and the Root has done a great job not only with the ambiance and design, but with the purposeful, relational approach they take to hosting a co-working hub.

What’s your work story?

I build things, I have been in construction my entire career. I go back to my time as a kid and I loved creating and making lego worlds. It was then I decided I would go into Construction. I hold a degree from JBU in Construction Management and Business. I worked in Tulsa for Flintco for nearly a decade helping on many projects ( my first was the BOK Center). I have since worked for a Design/Build firm, a manufacturing company (James Hardie), and one of my favorites – Tulsa Community College where I served as their director of construction and Facility Planning. I currently am a Director and lead the Tulsa office for Connect Advisors. We are expert Construction Consultants for anyone wanting to build anything. Some refer to us as Owners Reps or Program Managers, but we say we are your consultative partner in construction developments. If you have ever built a lego project, it can be quite challenging, now imagine the instructions were just created and you are the first one to use them on a massive set. That’s what building a new building or renovating a building is like. We help create order out of chaos. We are nationwide and have 6 offices across the states.

If you could switch professions for a day, what would you choose?

I think it would be President of the USA. I just got to know if aliens are real, if Elvis really died and the list goes on. I mean think of this day like my version of home alone in the white house.

What’s your favorite productivity hack or routine?

Turn your out of office on and tell all coworkers you are on vacation or going to be out of pocket and then actually work all day!

If you could design a dream coworking space feature, what would it be?

Man, an imaginary coworking world where everyone I know and all my friends have offices in the same massive coworking community. We probably wouldn’t get much work done, but would have a blast.
